Later that night we heard the king-man and his tribe knocking on a door. My eyes widened and my heart sped up even though they weren’t at our door.

I could hear their voices as they talked. They spoke quietly, but it was the same spiel they’d done when they had come to our shed earlier.

They were allowing a man to pick his for-now-wife from the women in the other shed. I wondered how they selected which sheds to go to at which time. Was it random? Were they rotating? Did the men get to choose?

It didn’t really matter. We had to escape before the king-man brought another suitor. If we were still here when he brought another it would be too late. I had a one in five chance at being selected. I couldn’t live with being chosen, and I imagine Jane felt similarly.

Within seconds of them leaving the other shed, someone lightly knocked on our door. A small whimper escaped from between my lips.

“It’s too soon! How are they back already?” I whispered in a panicked voice to Jane. My whole body was shaking with fear. “They just took someone for Christ’s sake!”

Jane and I wrapped our arms around one another as if we wouldn’t let the other go no matter what. If we stuck together they couldn’t pick one of us.

The door opened, and it wasn’t the king-man. It was just someone bringing us a meal. He barely even bothered to look up as he left the food and quickly closed the door.

I wanted to tackle him and force my way out, but there was another guard standing behind him. Even if I could have gotten past the first guy, I wouldn’t have made it more than four steps past the other. And if I even attempted it they’d probably watch me for days… mark me as someone trying to escape. I had to wait.

After we finished eating the other women lay down. It looked as though they were going to try to get some sleep, although I had no idea how that would be possible in this hell.

The woman with scraggly hair, the one they had taken earlier, was already taking slow, deep breaths. I was pretty sure she was already asleep. The day must have taken a toll on her body and her mind.

Once I was sure they were sleeping, I grabbed Jane’s arm. She looked at me, and I was pretty sure she was thinking about all the same things. How we could escape this hell hole.

“What are we going to do?” I said so softly I wasn’t even sure Jane had heard me and she was only inches away.

She shook her head, “I don’t know.”

“I have to get out of here! We have to get out of here… I have to find Ben and get as far away from this place as possible. I can’t stay here!” I said knowing exactly how desperate I sounded.

“Yeah, I know,” Jane said with a small nod that didn’t stop.
